Performance Evaluation of SCTP as a Transport Layer Protocol Master’s Thesis in Computer Network Engineering

چکیده
TCP and UDP are the most popular transport protocols used for end-end data transmission. The rapid growth of internet leads to development of many innovative applications in the current environment. Depending on the functionality of these applications, requirements of transport protocols are changing. TCP is known for its problems with Head Of Line blocking (HOL) and SYN attacks which gives reduced performance, and also doesn’t support MultiHoming. SCTP is another transport layer protocol similar to TCP which provides end-end communication. It has some unique features like support for Multi-homing and multistreaming. It also protects better from SYN attacks by using four-way hand shake mechanism during association establishment. As an extension to SCTP, CMT-SCTP was proposed to take full advantage of a multi-homed host by doing load sharing over multiple paths. SCTP is believed to be a next generation transport protocol. This thesis gives an overview of the SCTP protocol and its features focusing on analysing and testing of failover mechanisms provided by SCTP in multi-homed host, evaluating the transmission performance of SCTP vs TCP in a real network environment. This report also gives a theoretical analysis on how SCTP can mitigate SYN attacks by using four-way handshake mechanism and the state of art of CMT-SCTP. Performance Evaluations for Multimedia Applications over Pr - Sctp
As multimedia applications over the Internet proliferate, the efficient transport of both the signaling and multimedia data becomes increasingly important. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the two most widely used but limited transport protocols, are not well suited to contemporary multimedia applications involving digital voice, audio and video communicatio...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of subflow capable SCTP
With its new features such as multi-homing, multi-streaming, and enhanced security, the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) has become a promising candidate to join UDP and TCP as a general-purpose transport layer protocol. Multiple streams in an SCTP association provide an aggregation mechanism to accommodate heterogeneous objects, which belong to the same application but may require d...
متن کاملModeling and Performance Evaluation of Energy Consumption in S-MAC Protocol Using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets
One of the features of wireless sensor networks is that the nodes in this network have limited power sources. Therefore, assessment of energy consumption in these networks is very important. What has been common practice has been the use of traditional simulators to evaluate the energy consumption of the nodes in these networks. Simulators often have problems such as fluctuating output values i...
متن کاملSCTP: new transport protocol for TCP/IP - Internet Computing, IEEE
T he transport layer’s primary role is to provide end-to-end communications service between two or more applications running on different hosts. It isolates the applications from the specifics of the underlying network connecting the hosts and provides a simple interface for applications developers. The transport layer can also perform sophisticated actions such as flow control, error recovery,...
متن کاملDesign and Implementation of SCTP-aware DTLS
There is currently no widely accepted and deployed approach to provide security for the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). A promising new approach is to use the Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) protocol, adding an encryption and authentication layer between transport and application protocol. The adaption for SCTP supports all features without compromising security or requiri...
